Processors pull premium laptop prices down to more attractive levels

Qualcomm introduced the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus chip at IFA 2024 which is expected to make high-end laptops more accessible to users.

This 8-core Snapdragon X Plus is the same architecture as the more powerful 12-core X Elite and 10-core X Plus that Qualcomm introduced earlier. While it lacks the advanced graphics capabilities of the higher-end models, the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus is ideal for entry-level laptops. It offers a good balance of performance and efficiency, perfect for users who don't need top-of-the-line graphics.

Copilot+-enabled laptops will become cheaper in the future.

The octa-core Snapdragon X Plus comes with 30MB of CPU cache, 12MB less than its more powerful counterparts. It also has less than half the GPU power for gaming and productivity apps, resulting in about 50% lower graphics performance, according to Qualcomm's tests. For CPU tasks, it lags behind the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite by about 20%. However, it still matches the productivity performance of the 10-core Snapdragon X Plus chip.

“The first and best Copilot+ PCs powered by the Snapdragon X Series platform promise to usher in a new era of PCs powered by our innovative NPU,” said Cristiano Amon, president and CEO, Qualcomm. “With the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus, we are extending these transformative AI experiences to an even wider audience.”

Many features are available on the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus.

“Delivering best-in-class performance and exceptional battery life through our power-efficient custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU. We are proud to work with leading global OEMs and retail partners to expand our portfolio, enabling both enterprise and consumer customers to benefit from these advancements,” the executive added.

The integrated GPU supports up to three external displays and ensures stunning graphics and vivid visuals. At the heart of the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core is a powerful 45 TOPS NPU that delivers unparalleled AI processing power and peak performance. Combined with advanced connectivity features, the platform takes productivity to the next level in ultra-mobile devices.

Power makes 10-core Snapdragon X Plus PCs more appealing.

The 8-core Snapdragon X Plus is expected to bring the price of Copitot+ laptops down even further than Qualcomm's ARM chips earlier this year. Laptops with the processor will be released soon, including the Asus Vivobook S 15, which will cost around $899, compared to the $1,300 variant with the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite. Likewise, Dell's Inspiron 14 will also cost $899, making it a great option for those looking for solid performance without breaking the bank.
